A solvent cleaner is apparently responsible for multiple reports of dogs being sickened by rawhide chews.

American Beefhide, Digest-Eeze, Healthy Hide Chews Recalled – Cleaning Chemical Found

The company behind brands like American Beefhide, Digest-Eeze and Healthy Hide has announced a recall of rawhide chew dog treats because the rawhide was produced with a solvent cleaning chemical that is not allowed for use in the production of rawhide dog chews.

In its press release about the recall ChewsPet Group, which is a division of Spectrum Brands, Inc., said that the recall was prompted by its discovery that manufacturing plants in Mexico and Colombia, as well as a supplier in Brazil, were using the non-allowed chemical.

But the company also admitted that it has already received reports of dogs being sickened, apparently by the chews. Calling the reports “very limited”, the company said that some dogs have reportedly experienced diarrhea and vomiting.

Three brands are affected by this recall: American Beefhide, Digest-Eeze and Healthy Hide. The company did not provide photos I can pass along to you.

American Beefhide

The American Beefhide chews being recalled have lot codes beginning with “AH” and have expiration date codes running from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020. All packages, regardless of size, fitting those criteria are recalled.

The affected lot codes of Digest-Eeze chews are:

  • AH
  • AV
  • A
  • AI
  • AO
  • AB

The covered expiration date codes run from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020. Again, all package sizes are covered.

Healthy Hide

Exactly which Healthy Hide products are included in the recall wasn’t made entirely clear in the company’s press release, which said only that “certain packages” of  Healthy Hide Good-n-Fit brand, and Healthy Hide Good-n-Fun were affected.

The recalled dog chews were sold nationwide through various stores and online retailers. Petco, which offers at least 4 of the Digest-eeze rawhide chews, does not appear to have any mention of the recall on its website. By contrast, its competitor, PetSmart, which also carries the Digest-eeze brand, does have a notice which lists the covered UPCs and the relevant Best-By codes.

If you have any of the recalled chews on hand you are urged to either just throw them out or return them to your place of purchase. And if you would like more information about any of the recalled rawhide chews you can contact the company at 1-855-215-4962 during normal business hours.
