United Pet Group is expanding its recall of rawhide dog chews to include retail partners’ private label brands.

Rawhide Chews Recall Expanded

The company that last week announced a recall of rawhide dog chews tainted with a non-allowed solvent is now saying that it is expanding its recall of the treats to include private label store brands.

The company’s original recall of American Beefhide, Digest-Eeze and Healthy Hide chews was prompted, it claims, by the discovery that some of its manufacturers, located in Mexico and Colombia, and a supplier based in Brazil were using a quaternary ammonium compound mixture to make the chews. Such compounds, which are used to make surfactants and fabric softeners, have been linked to multiple health issues and are not allowed in the U.S. for the processing of rawhide chews.

The company admitted last week that it had received complaints of dogs experiencing diarrhea and vomiting severe enough to require a visit to a veterinarian.

Now, this new recall greatly expands the list of recalled chews. Currently included are:

  • Companion – Recalled chews will bear lot codes beginning with AH, AV, A, AI, AO or AB and expiration codes running from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020.
  • Dentley’s – Recalled chews will bear lot codes beginning with  AH, AV, A, AI, AO or AB and expiration codes running from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020.

  • Dentahex –  Recalled chews include Dentahex chips with UPC 17030030228, 17030030235, 17030030242 or 17030030259 and expiration dates running from 06/01/2021 through 05/31/2022.

The company says that these products were shipped to pet supply stores nationwide and through various online outlets.

If you think you have any rawhide chews matching these criteria you can simply toss them out or return them to your place of purchase, where you will be offered a refund of your purchase price. You can also speak directly to a company representative by calling 1-855-215-4962 in the mornings.

Neither the company nor the FDA, which is the overseeing government agency for pet food products, has said exactly how many reports of dogs being sickened have been logged so far.
